NV: Medical Foul Play Abounds

A violent anesthesiologist censured and punished.  The medical license of a fraudulent doctor revoked.  At least a dozen other medical professionals subjects of official complaints.  There are over 600 complaints still under state investigation.  These are all cases involving deliberate wrongdoing or negligence committed on behalf of medical professionals in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners has resolved a number of these cases.  According to Douglas Cooper, chief of investigations for the Board, hundreds more are still under investigation.

We as a society put tremendous faith in the medical community. While most members of the medical field are upstanding, skilled, and prudent professionals, others are fraudulent, careless, negligence, and even dangerous.  We believe that our doctors and medical staff will live up to the high standards of the field and provide the highest quality of service when we need them the most.  From the following cases, it is clear to see that not all Nevada medical professionals are able to meet these reasonable expectations.

Last Friday, the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners ordered anesthesiologist Ronald H Foote, M.D. to pay a fine of almost $10,000 and comply with a compulsory drug and alcohol diversion program.  In September 2004, the doctor was involved in a hit-and-run accident but was later detained by the police and brought to a local medical center for treatment.

There, Dr. Foote, reeking of alcohol, began to get severely agitated.  He grabbed the genitals of a male nurse and made threats to the police and others at the scene.  Reportedly, Dr. Foote, screamed at one of the officers, “You had better not come into my ER in need of intubation because I will not save your life.”  Soon after, Foote disconnected his medical treatment equipment and left the hospital against medical orders.

The Board recently revoked the license of Dr. Mohammad Fani-Salek of Las Vegas and ordered him to pay a fine of $5,000.  According to the Board, Dr. Fani-Salek falsely represented himself as a graduate from a medical school in Iran.  He was practicing without a valid medical license.

The license of another Nevada medical professional was revoked because he failed to inform the Board that he had his medical license taken away in another country for over-prescribing controlled substances and failing to keep adequate medical records.

Another doctor failed to tell the Nevada State Board that he had been on probation in California after the grossly careless treatment of six patients.

Another medical professional was publicly reprimanded for failing to inform medical authorities that he’d been previously convicted of petty theft.
