The sole survivor in an automobile accident involving a Las Vegas state trooper and four people trapped in the vehicle has emerged from her coma.
Cecilia Cruz, who is three months pregnant, has woken up after a car accident that happened on an interstate of Las Vegas. In the vehicle with her were her husband, sister, brother-in-law, and a close family friend. All of the passengers with her died at the scene of the accident.
Cruz suffered pelvis, rib, and lower back fractures and internal injuries. After she woke up from her coma, Cruz was upgraded to fair condition. Doctors say that her pregnancy also appeared to be healthy and normal.
The Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas hired lawyers to aide in the painful process of shipping the bodies back to their home in Chiapas, Mexico. All passengers were illegal immigrants who worked landscaping and construction jobs in the Nevada area.
Also involved in the crash was state trooper, Joshua M. Corcran, who was released from the hospital with broken bones, cuts, and bruises.
According to a witness, Corcran sped along the interstate without his overhead lights or siren activated. Investigators are trying to determine whether Corcran was in pursuit of another vehicle or responding to a call.
The Vehicle that Cruz was riding in was going at 65 mph, the speed limit for that particular stretch of highway.
Now, though, Corcran could face vehicular manslaughter charges under a Nevada law which makes it a felony to cause a crash that results in death.
